5 Minutes Can Make A Difference-Call Now! Posted: February 26, 2003
The 2003 legislative session will end in 9 more legislative days, and before that time, the General Assembly wll cast several votes of environmental significance.
One, the fate of the Environmental Quality Commission, will be discussed tomorrow. The Senate Budget bill passed today (Tuesday 2/26) has NO funding for the Environmental Quality Commission. Please call or fax your state senator and representative requesting that the EQC budget be fully restored in the Conference Committee (they resolve the House and Senate versions of the budget). Another is House Bill 458 - the oil and gas industry's effort to avoid accountability to local government for the industry's harm to private and public lands. Though the bill is not on the agenda, it may be taken up at the 10 a.m. Thursday morning in the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Commmittee, to which it was only assigned tonight (Wednesday).
Take a minute, if you will, and call the legislative message line at 1-800-372-7181 and ask them to send a message to each member of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee - Vote NO on HB 458 - Don't trample the counties ability to protect their citizens from oil and gas industry abuses unless you are ready to direct the state to provide that protection. Leave a message for Senator Ernie Harris NOT to rush through a bill that is not on his committee agenda, and to allow fair opportunity for committee amendments by waiting until next week to hear the bill.
