Kentucky, Ohio Uranium Isolation Facilities Top List of Ozone Layer Polluters :Courier-Journal Report  Posted: May 29, 2001
According to a report in the Louisville Courier-Journal the Uranium-235 enrichment plant in Paducah, Ky., and its sister facility in Ohio released 818,000 pounds of CFC-114 in 1999. This amounts to 88 percent of the national total of industrial sources, and an estimated 14 percent of all CFC114 emissions worldwide.


CFC114 is a chemical that destroys the Earth's ozone layer. Upper aptmosphere ozone blocks strong ultra-violet radiation that causes some skin cancers.
