HB 199 Would Create a Framework for Plugging 14,000 Abandoned Oil and Gas Wells Across the State

Over the past 5 years, a working group comprised of oil and gas operators, landowner representatives, agency officials, and the Kentucky Resources Council, have developed several bills that have modernized regulation of oil and gas operations, including controls on naturally-occurring radioactive materials associated with oil and gas production, reclamation of areas disturbed by oil and gas operations, and this year, a bill to increase the amount of plugging bonds, creating a framework for plugging of 14,000 abandoned wells across the state, and providing enhanced enforcement authority to the Energy and Environment Cabinet. KRC is  proud of the workgroup, and particularly of the Kentucky Oil and Gas Association, for whom consensus on this bill was a heavy lift.
