In 2019 Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has faced two threats. The first being a proposed LG&E pipeline to run through Bernheim property. The second, a proposed I-65/I-71 regional connector that would run through Bernheim property.
On October 23, we received some good news! Governor Bevin and Transportation Cabinet Secretary Thomas
announced that the proposed I-65 / I-71 Regional Connector Planning Study will no longer consider crossing through property owned by the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. The Governor applauded the Cabinet for their work in selecting "the best possible route for the connector without affecting the conservation land." The Cabinet had included a preliminary route that would affect lands previously purchased in by Bernheim in order to protect a conservation corridor to the north of the forest proper, and upon becoming aware, deleted that preliminary corridor from consideration due to "environmental concerns."
We deeply appreciate the decisions made here, and ALL OF YOU who contacted our state officials to express your opposition to that transportation corridor crossing Bernheim property.
